MY! Mental Health

The month of May is dedicated to patients with mental illness, thus, mental health awareness month. We stand together with those affected and join the world in raising awareness, acknowledging that it okay not to be okay, and speaking up against mental health stigma.

Hospitals and health systems play a pivotal role in providing behavioral health care and helping patients find resources available in their community. Most mental health distress is episodic, and not permanent. Most patients can successfully navigate the challenges that come from experiencing mental health disorders with treatment, peer and professional support services, and a strong family and social support network.

Mental health is essential for a person's overall health. Prevention treatment is effective, and people can recover from mental disorders and live full and productive lives. Taking care of our mental health is as normal as eating healthy, exercising, or even investing in the future. Research shows that education and being open about our mental health helps reduce stigma. Talking about our challenges can encourage others to be more open as well.

Governments across the globe, the public health community, and the general public have made efforts to increase the importance of understanding both prevention and treatment of mental health problems. These efforts have significantly improved the outlook for those affected by mental illnesses.

Mental Health Month gives all of us a valuable opportunity to celebrate the tremendous strides the government has played in promoting mental health and increasing public knowledge that effective services and support are available. Mental health affects thoughts, feelings, and actions. When one has positive mental health, they are better equipped to handle stress, be more productive, and realize their full potential.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we can all make a difference for ourselves and each other by checking in with loved ones and peers, using self-care strategies to take care of our own mental well-being as joined efforts have successfully promoted acceptance, support, prevention, and recovery.
